Guardsman Vent Sanitizing: The Las Vegas Owner’s Guide

If you have a Guardsman vent sanitizing system and it’s stopped working or throwing a fault code, we can usually get it diagnosed and back online the same day. Installed replacement parts for Guardsman vent sanitizing units in Las Vegas typically run $180 – $420 depending on the model and which component failed, with the UV lamp and ballast being the two most common culprits. Most Las Vegas homeowners notice the problem two ways: a faint ozone or electrical smell that fades, or the system’s indicator light going dark after a power surge, which happens more than you’d think in older Summerlin and Henderson neighborhoods with aging transformers.

Here’s what I tell customers when they call about this: Guardsman vent sanitizing systems are a fundamentally different animal from a standard UV purifier. These are the units that mount inside the supply plenum, directly above the AC coil, and they use a specific wavelength and reflector geometry to treat the air moving past, not the coil itself. That means the parts you need aren’t interchangeable with generic UV bulbs you’ll find on a shelf. Below is everything we’ve learned after replacing dozens of these across Las Vegas, from what fails first to what it actually costs to fix here versus ordering a questionable knockoff online.

Which Guardsman Models This Applies To

Guardsman’s vent sanitizing lineup is smaller than what you see from Honeywell or Aprilaire, but it covers three distinct generations: the GS-VS series (the original single-lamp units), the GS-VS2 series (dual-lamp with a removable ballast tray), and the newer GS-PRO series that integrates a pressure switch so the lamp only fires when the blower is actually moving air. The compatibility gotcha most people don’t realize: the GS-VS and GS-VS2 use the exact same mounting plate but completely different lamp wattages. If you try to swap a VS bulb into a VS2 housing, it will fit, light briefly, and burn out in under a month because the ballast is overdriving it. We’ve seen this exact mistake on equipment installed by at least three other companies in Las Vegas.

OEM versus aftermarket is worth a real conversation here. Guardsman’s OEM lamps are built to run at their rated output for roughly 9,000 hours of actual on-time, which translates to about two years in a Las Vegas home where the AC runs 3,800 to 4,200 hours per year. Aftermarket equivalents exist and some are fine, but the spec range matters: you need a lamp rated at 254nm wavelength with at least 85% output at 12,000 hours if you’re going non-OEM. Cheap bulbs drift off wavelength as they age, and at that point you’re paying for a glowing tube that isn’t killing anything. When we quote a replacement, Omar Haddad or one of our techs will read the model off the ballast label with you over the phone or in person, because the ballast is the real identifier, not the sticker on the housing.

Signs Your Guardsman Vent Sanitizing Is Failing

  • Indicator light is out or flickering. This almost always points to the ballast, not the lamp. Ballasts on Guardsman units are the same type used in commercial kitchen UV systems, and they fail gradually rather than all at once. A flicker is the ballast telling you it’s on its way out.
  • Faint sulfur or stagnant odor near the supply vents. The Guardsman’s sanitizing action produces a slight amount of oxidation. When the lamp stops working, you lose that effect and you’ll notice the difference within a week or two, especially if you have pets or a smoker in the house.
  • Visibly dim lamp through the sight glass. Guardsman systems have a small safety viewport on the side. If the lamp looks like a dying neon sign rather than a bright, steady blue-white, the lamp itself has reached end-of-life. In Las Vegas, where our air is dry and dusty, lamps collect a fine dust film on the quartz sleeve, which reduces output even before the lamp truly fails.
  • Recurring microbial smell on the AC coil, despite the system being installed. This is the less obvious failure. If the coil still smells weeks after the lamp was replaced, the unit may not actually be positioned correctly for your plenum depth, or the lamp is the wrong wattage for the housing. We see positioning errors frequently in rectangular plenums on older ranch houses in Paradise and Spring Valley, where the plenum is shorter than what the installation guide assumes.
  • System trips the circuit or GFCI. This is almost exclusively a ballast short. Don’t reset and keep running it. A shorted ballast can damage the lamp permanently, and you’ll end up replacing both instead of one part.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

We price this by the component, not by the hour. Here’s what an installed Guardsman vent sanitizing replacement runs in Las Vegas today:

  • Replacement UV lamp (GS-VS, GS-VS2, or GS-PRO): $180 – $260 installed, including a thorough wipe-down of the quartz sleeve and a coil-inspection note so you know if anything else is lurking in the plenum.
  • Replacement ballast: $240 – $320 installed, including testing the old lamp before we discard it. If the lamp was already old when the ballast failed, we’ll tell you, and we’ll replace both at a small discount rather than see you back in four months.
  • Full assembly replacement (lamp, ballast, and reflector): $310 – $420 installed. This is the route we recommend when the system is over five years old and you want the full sanitizing output you had on day one.

Every price is written before work starts, hands down, no exceptions. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers every replacement we install; if the lamp, ballast, or full assembly fails within a year, we return and fix it at no charge. A free second visit if the repair fails is the real deal, not marketing language. And unlike order-it-yourself online, our vans carry Guardsman-compatible lamps, ballasts, and reflectors for all three generations, so we’re not running back and forth between your house and a supply house in North Las Vegas.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely do the diagnosis half of this yourself: check the status light, open the sight glass and look at the lamp, and read the model off the ballast label so you know what you have. What I’d caution against is the actual replacement on the GS-VS2 and GS-PRO models. These systems tie into the blower circuit and the ballast carries a startup voltage spike that can absolutely bite if the power isn’t fully isolated, and the quartz sleeve inside the unit is sharp when broken. The GS-VS is more straightforward, but what I see go wrong with home swaps is the same every time: the lamp gets installed without cleaning the quartz sleeve, three weeks later the output drops again, and the customer doesn’t know why. The sleeve’s entire job is to transmit UV light; if it’s coated with a year of dust and skin oil, you’re wasting half the lamp’s lifespan. We can swap a lamp or ballast on a Guardsman in under an hour, and the price we quote is what you pay. If you’re looking at the unit right now and wondering whether it’s worth fixing, call (725) 600-6597 and we’ll help you sort it out before anyone schedules a visit.
